Some of the many uses for sawdust:
1. Soak up spills.
Keep a bucket handy for accidents. Sawdust is highly absorbent and can quickly contain spills of grease, oil or paint.
2. Clean a cement floor.
Moisten a pile of sawdust with water and use a push broom to sweep it around the concrete floor of your garage, basement, or shop. The wet sawdust will capture and absorb fine dust and grime.
3. Make a fire starter.
Melt candle wax in a double boiler pot for safety, (recycle those used candle ends), add sawdust until the liquid thickens, pour into an empty egg carton and let cool. Use the briquettes to help get a fire going. If you want to get decorative, you can wrap these in any kind of paper, twist the ends. When you go to use them, simply light the paper ends.
4. Pack a path.
Tamp sawdust into a dirt walkway to curtail erosion and create a soft, fragrant pathway through your garden or wooded lot. Sawdust takes a long time to break down. Used for a path, it will curtail plant growth for a time, since it steals the nitrogen while it is decomposing. Bonus: Fresh pine sawdust has a wonderful aroma.
5. Feed your plants.
Sawdust mixed with manure and/or a nitrogen supplement keeps your plants healthy and moist, too. Note: It must be mixed with nitrogen or manure or it will steal nitrogen from the soil as it breaks down/decomposes.
6. For composting:
It will 'compost' but takes longer than most materials, unless mixed with manure & other waste materials, as mentioned above.
7. Make cement go further and much lighter to handle.
Sawdust mixed into mortar is used when erecting cordwood walls to aid in bonding logs together. Do the same when casting lightweight vessels and moisture-loving planters. You can also buy molds for making sidewalk blocks; sawdust-cement blocks are much easier to handle.
8. Fill wood holes and defects.
Professional floor refinishers use very fine sawdust or "wood flour" as it makes an excellent, stainable filler when mixed into a putty with wood glue. Our sawdust is coarser and would be suitable for all less exacting projects.
9. For Crafts: eg: Make fake snow.
-Mix sawdust with white paint and glue to cover holiday crafts with simulated snow.
-Stuff homemade pincushions with it, or.... whatever other craft you can imagine...
10. Doggie Beds:
Has insulation value and is an inexpensive filler in a dog-house bed.
11. For Sheds, Dog Houses, Chicken Houses, etc:
Use sawdust as a filler between studs in the walls as an inexpensive insulation: Keep cooler in summer, warmer in winter.
12. For cleaning barns:
Sawdust absorbs urine and feces very effectively. Can also be placed beforehand to catch the urine and feces for removal later. Reduces odors also.
13. In an Ice-house:
Before fridges, sawdust was used to keep a huge block of ice frozen all summer. A useful fact if you ever plan an extended stay in the wilderness, to live off-grid. Or, during an extended power outage.
14. Get a grip in ice and snow.
Winter loggers spread sawdust on bush roads to provide traction and strengthen compacted snow while protecting the ground underneath. Wood ashes work great also to get traction on icy patches. Fill a gallon coffee can to keep in your trunk. You'll be thrilled how little it can take when you get out of tight spot.
15. Composting Toilet:
Great use as it saves on the use of potable water and there is no smell. In locations where sewers are not allowed and you have to haul in water or have a limited water supply, such as lake lots, the combination of sawdust toilet and a compost pile can meet sanitation needs. There are many designs to be found online. Here is one informative link of many. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compost#.22Humanure.22
16. Insulation:
If you are building a dog-house, chicken house or another animal shelter, sawdust can be used to insulate it. Fill between the studs with dry sawdust. It insulates very well, retaining the heat in the winter and keeping the space cooler in the summer. (I spoke with an old-timer who recalled how warm his grand-parents house was compared to many others of the day. It was insulated with sawdust from their sawmill.)
One more:
Our sawdust is not walnut, but I couldn't resist sharing this interesting fact.
17. Curb weeds.
Sawdust from walnut wood is a natural weed killer. Sweep this variety between the cracks of your walkway.
