FAQ's & Building Tips: Fence Boards & more:
1. What is the quality of the boards?
Better than average. In our yard, every order is a mix of all grades from Construction through Common to Select or better. In our small operation, there is no separating lumber into grades like the large mills that ship boards of all one grade to local building supply store.
We can tell you that customers say our lumber is a great quality and that we have many repeat customers. If you are concerned about ordering from a small business, please see below for our guarantee.

2. What is the size of the boards & how does that compare with planed?
All boards, whether rough, resawn or planed are referred to as a 1x6x6', the usual full undressed or original rough-cut dimension of 1"thick by 6" wide by 6 feet long.
Planed boards are milled to 5½ inches wide by 3/4 inches thick.
Still other fence boards are often resawn at 5½ inches by 5/8 inches thick.
Our boards are a full 6 inches wide by 7/8 inches thick.
An extra 1/2 inch per board, may not seem like much, however, when you are building your fence, that 1/2 inch means 16 of our boards will cover the usual 8 feet between posts. Planed to 5½ inches means it takes 17½ boards to cover the same 8 feet. If you are spacing your posts 10 feet apart, it will take 20 of our boards versus 22 milled boards.
See our Fence Boards page for comparison of full-sized and milled stringers.

3. Are the boards rough or planed?
Lumber off the mill is called rough-cut, however band-sawn lumber has a very smooth texture in comparison to lumber cut on a circular mill.
4. Are planed boards superior to rough boards?
When it comes to fences, bandsawn-rough is better, for two reasons:
i) leaving the boards rough keeps the strength of thickness
ii) Rough boards have open pores which absorb and hold the stain, versus
planed/milled, which closes the pores of the boards hampering absorption of stain.

5. Can fresh-sawn boards be stained?
Homeowner fence.
The sooner the better. The boards in this picture were pre-stained, a service we provided, within days after being sawn. They were given a second coat by spraying after installation.
Pre-staining the boards before hanging them on the stringers, means the whole surface of the board benefits from the protection from moisture that stain affords.

6. How many coats of stain is recommended?
Two coats diluted stain
Depending on the stain color and quality, one coat may be sufficient. in general, two coats of stain will usually give good coverage. For the first coat, even the second, you can dilute your stain, half-and-half with water (note: water-based-stain only-see below for details on mixing). This will absorb into the wood and give adequate coverage. Applying this as a pre-stain, before assembling the fence, means the whole board/stringer, etc gets stained, protecting every part of your fence from moisture. Applying the first coat after your fence is assembled means some surfaces will not be accessible for staining, and remain susceptible to the effects of weathering
Once your fence is assembled, you can apply a second coat as needed or desired. For cost effectiveness, you can experiment with full strength stain, or diluted-strengths to get the coverage you want. For your dilution-test swatches use small amounts of well-mixed stain.

7. How many boards can a 5 gallon bucket of stain cover?
If you are using water-based stain, we have found:
-the first coat can be diluted half & half
-5 gal. mixed with equal parts water
-10 gallons prepared as above, covers about 200 - 250 boards, sometimes more, depending on color choice.
Different colors & quality of stain absorb differently.
Note: If choosing to dilute your water-based stain:
First, mix the undiluted stain very well.
Next, pour 1/2 of the 5-gallon bucket into an empty 5-gallon bucket.
Then add water and mix well again.
You are ready to apply stain to your boards using a brush, roller or by dipping.
We are in the process of designing a portable dipping trough for rental.
It has been our experience that dipping is the easiest way to stain boards
and makes the most efficient use of stain.

8. What species are the boards?
Our boards are a mix of mostly pine, some spruce. This year we will have limited amounts of aspen, more commonly known as poplar. We are pleased to add black & white poplar to our line of products, as it is often preferred for barn flooring, horse & livestock corrals.
9. We like the look of varnished pine. Can we order only pine boards?
Pine boards
We will fill most any order, whenever possible, if you are willing to pay for the extra work involved in custom cutting and preparing your order.
There are several factors that affect pricing a special order, such as: volume, non-standard lengths, widths, the amount of side lumber that will result from custom sawing, as well as the extra time involved. Call and we will discuss your needs with you.

11. What are the advantages of Boron treating vs Pressure-treated?
i) Boron rods treat from the inside out. The moisture-activated rods go on treating for years.
ii) Boron disperses through the heart of post, traveling in the same way sap does in a living tree. It treats where preservative is needed, at the ground level where moisture sits. iii) Posts can be retreated as needed. Remove the plug to check the rod. If it has dissolved, insert another rod for ongoing treatment. (See below for more information.) |
i) Pressure-treating is on the surface of the wood. When posts and lumber gets bruised, chipped or scarred or becomes split or cracked from exposure to the elements, precipitation and hot sun, the untreated interior wood becomes exposed to the elements.
ii) Pressure-treating is only on the surface. Anywhere the surface is broken through, is no longer treated. iii) Pressure-treating is a one-time event. |
12. I haven't heard of boron for treating. How long has it been around?
Genics, the maker of COBRA™ Rods has been in the wood preservation business for over 25 years, providing wood pole testing and treating services along with wood preservation products and solutions to electrical utilities around North America. Genics' philosophy is to keep it simple and safe from manufacture to installation to the environment. This philosophy has lead to the develop-ment of the Genics' COBRA™ wood protection system which, when used according to labeling can extend the service life of wooden structures by years.
13. What exactly are boron or COBRA™ Rods?
14. How do I use them for preserving my posts?
Instructions for Boron Rod & Plug Installation:
1. Drill
Drill a hole at ground level (for posts and poles)
using a 1/16 ” over sized spade or ship auger bit.
Start the hole with the drill positioned horizontally. Once the bit is established, raise the drill to aim downward into the post at a 45 degree angle.
Drill deep enough to insert the treating rod and still have enough headroom to accommodate a plug.
2. Insert Rod
Insert COBRA™ Rod(s) into the hole.
Never hammer the COBRA™ Rod(s) during installation
3. Plug
Insert the plug and push firmly to seat in the hole. Hammer in plug until flush with surface.

15. How much will my fence order weigh?
Multiply the total boards in your fence order by 7 lbs to get the weight on just the boards:
Eg: 300 boards x 7 pounds= 2100 pounds
Repeat with Stringers and Posts:
Stringers 2x4x8 (12 pounds each) or 1.5x4x8 (9.33 pounds)
Stringers 2x6x8 (37 pounds each) or 1.5x6x8 (14 pounds each)
Posts 4x4x8 (25 pounds each)
Note: lumber by nature, absorbs & releases moisture over its life span.
The above weights are only approximate.
Humid weather will add to the weight and dry weather will reduce the weight.
Example: a 150-ft fence order, posts spaced 8 feet apart.
18 posts @ 25 lbs=450 lbs
17 sections x 2 stringers= 34 x 37 lbs=1258 lbs
17 sections x 16 boards/section= 272 boards x 7 lbs=1904 lbs
The total load will weigh approximately 3612-3700 lbs.
Eg: 300 boards x 7 pounds= 2100 pounds

16. What will I need if I pick-up my lumber at Stony Plain or Edson?
i) You will need 2-3 heavy-duty ratchet straps (preferably 2") for securing your load safely.
ii) It is advisable to bring a long load flag if will be leaving your end-gate down. (A piece of red cloth will work just fine.)
iii) calculate the maximum load capacity of your vehicle and/or trailer. If your order is more than your maximum safe load capacity, you may need to make two trips.
If two trips are necessary, it may be more cost-effective to engage our delivery service as our truck & trailer are rated for heavy loads.
17. How do I calculate my safe load capacity?
Consult your vehicle and/or trailer manual for the load capacity specifications given by manufacturer. If your tires are not original, you will need to check your tire ratings. If you would like more specific information, you can consult this website.
