Windbreak Fences: A fence with a porosity of 20% provides the best wind protection.
(see below) |
Best Design!
Fences with a solid face and little or no spacing, are not optimal for a wind-shelter fence for cattle, horses or livestock in general, especially in areas which suffer snowfall in the winters. (Which in our case is all of Alberta.)
The irregular shapes of these boards creates the spacing between boards, which changes wind patterns and snow drift patterns. Slabs and 2nd-cut slabs have long been used for wind-fence material, most likely quite some time before research was conducted. |
Check out the research:
- Optimum protection is obtained with a fence porosity of 25 to 33 per cent. The protected area will extend 8 to 10 times the height of the fence. To get 25 per cent porosity, space 6 inch boards 2 inches apart. To get 33 per cent porosity, space 6 inch boards 3 inches apart.
- There is no significant difference in wind protection if the boards are mounted vertically or horizontally.
- The force of wind tending to overturn a windbreak is made up of both pressure on the windward side, and suction on the leeward side. For that reason, a partially porous fence has to withstand the same amount of wind force as a solid fence. A force reduction from a reduced surface area is offset by increased suction when the wind penetrates the openings between slabs.
- Figure 3 shows wind turbulence about a solid fence, and snowdrift patterns about a porous fence. This demonstrates why solid walls should be avoided. http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex4516

Pasture Fencing
Using Wind Boards Horizontally
These folks wanted an economical method to enclose their horse pasture.
They decided on placing our wind boards in three horizontal rows versus four.

Rustic Siding: another use for rough-cut boards:
Ready for the door
Use as Board-&-Batten siding
on sheds, pole buildings, barns, chicken coops, calf shelters, car ports, etc...
Stain or varnish them to your liking.
If desired, let them weather. Exposure to wind and rain, will turn them to a natural old-building-grey.
Pine that is exposed to the sun, but protected by a large overhanging eaves, will turn the exposed wood-grain into a burnished hues of golds and browns.

Another Use... Roofing!
The wider boards can be used in an -overlapping shingle-style as 'roofing' to shed water on calf shelters, wood-sheds etc.
Cut boards to the width of your roof, start at the lower edge and generously overlap boards from the lower edge to the peak.

Looking for Barn-Boards? We have weathered boards...
Pine, when left to time and the elements, weathers to a shades of grey. If you have any project which calls for weathered lumber and can't find barn boards, you can check out our supply of aged lumber.
Aged lumber lends to the beauty and appeal of certain projects, like cabin furniture, outdoor benches, potting benches, garden decor and some projects made in an early American colonial style.
